Innovation for Railway Infrastructure

Every rail network faces unique challenges. Innovation means meeting them with new thinking, not just new equipment. For over a century, our teams have turned decades of track-side experience into rail technology that keeps networks safer and more reliable in over 100 countries.

A century of innovation

Pandrol has spent more than a century pushing innovation in the rail industry forward. What began with the first resilient rail fastening has grown into a portfolio spanning aluminothermic welding, track equipment and inspection technology.

Every development starts track-side. Our experts have worked in the field for decades, encountering the pressures that shape rail networks in over 100 countries. That experience feeds directly into new rail technology.

2027 marks 125 years of Pandrol rail innovation. The milestone is a marker of consistency: the same commitment to solving real problems that defined the business a century ago still shapes it today. That same discipline underpins the safety of millions of people who rely on rail infrastructure fitted with Pandrol technology every day.

That innovation is driven by engineering teams across Pandrol’s sites worldwide, including four Centres of Excellence. With more than 100 patents, Pandrol has a long history of turning engineering expertise into protected innovation.

Expertise built track-side

01

End-to-end project expertise

Our knowledge extends beyond individual products to the whole track environment, from initial design through to daily operation. That end-to-end view means solutions are shaped by how a railway actually works, not just how a single component performs.

02

Decades of track-side experience

Our engineers have spent years working directly on the track, not just in the lab. That hands-on experience means the team has encountered nearly every challenge a rail network can face, across networks in over 100 countries, and has learned from each one.

03

Bespoke thinking, shared benefit

When a client's challenge doesn't fit an existing product, Pandrol develops a specific solution to meet it. Those bespoke projects don't stay isolated: the thinking behind them regularly informs the wider product and service range for every customer, wherever they operate. That’s true rail innovation.

Latest Pandrol innovations

The Pandrol product range includes technology already protected by patent, each one developed to solve a specific problem on the track.

i+align

01

i+align

i+align replaces the manual A-frame with automated rail alignment ahead of welding. It positions the rail precisely, helping welding teams work faster without sacrificing the accuracy a strong weld depends on.

i+cool

02

i+cool

i+cool speeds up weld cooling with a fine water mist, bringing the joint to the right temperature for grinding. Compact at around 20kg, it works across normal gap, wide gap, head wash repair welding, SD and common interfaces.

i+heat previewPicture

03

i+heat

The i+heat is a battery-powered, fully automated preheater that prepares the rail joint ahead of the pour. Automating this step removes a manual variable from the process and supports more reliable, repeatable welds.

i+seal (formerly Autoseal) websitePicture1

04

i+seal

i+seal is one of our newer additions to the aluminothermic welding range, designed to streamline the moulding stage of the process for welding teams on the ground.

i+connect websitePicture1

05

i+connect

i+connect gathers weld data through a mobile app on site, an online dashboard for monitoring performance remotely, and an admin tool for applying local standards, giving welding teams a clearer view across every project.

Looking ahead

Like many industries, rail networks are moving toward greater automation and robotisation. We’re already exploring how these technologies can support rail welding, inspection and maintenance work safely and reliably. This is a direction rather than a finished destination: work is ongoing, and new developments will be shared as they reach the track.

We also work with customers over the long term to anticipate what a network will need years ahead and develop solutions to match.

As Pandrol approaches 125 years in rail, our partnerships – not just our products – remain the foundation of our success.
