Heavy Haul

Few networks place more strain on track infrastructure than heavy haul rail, where axle loads among the heaviest in the industry move iron ore, coal and bulk minerals over some of the toughest routes in rail. For over 40 years, Pandrol has supplied products built for these loads, shaping major heavy haul railways across Africa, Australia, Brazil, Canada and the USA.

Challenges

Heavy haul freight operators run some of the highest axle loads in rail, often above 30 tonnes and rising toward 40 tonnes and beyond. That weight accelerates wear on rails, fastenings and sleepers, shortening component life and increasing the risk of costly failures. Many heavy haul corridors also cross remote terrain and extreme climates, adding further stress to track and equipment. With freight networks running close to capacity, maintenance windows are narrow, so any unplanned downtime is expensive and disruptive to operators.

  • Axle loads up to 40 tonnes and beyond accelerate wear on rails, fastenings and sleepers, shortening component life across the network.

  • Heavy haul routes operate across extreme and varied climates, from arctic cold to desert heat, demanding equipment that performs everywhere.

  • Continuous high-tonnage traffic leaves narrow maintenance windows, adding to the track maintenance challenges heavy haul operators face daily.

  • Many heavy haul corridors cross remote terrain, adding logistical complexity to the expanding list of heavy haul track maintenance challenges.

Building a Resilient Heavy Haul Railway Across Mongolia

Building a future ready, Heavy Haul railway line that stretches across the Gobi desert, eastwards through Mongolia to eventually link up with the Russian network leading to Vladivostok, totaling around 6,000 km, sounds both an exciting challenge and an opportunity.

Did you know?

Pandrol has manufactured so many rail fastenings over its history that if you lined them all up, you would have enough to build a railway track that stretches all the way from the Earth to the Moon (and we are currently working on the return trip!).
