One of our latest projects in Florence, Italy, is a perfect example. We played a vital role in modernising urban mobility while preserving the city’s historic heritage. By installing our QTrack® and Floating Slab Mat solutions, we reduced noise and vibrations along the city’s new tramline—ensuring that Florence remains both accessible and sustainable without compromising its iconic landmarks. Even better, our technology is made from recycled vehicle tyres, demonstrating how engineering can harmonize with environmental responsibility.

Sustainable Track Solutions

Pandrol implemented its QTrack embedded track technology for the Florence tram project. Quick and simple to install, QTrack is completely encapsulated by elastic, prefabricated, resin-bonded rubber to reduce vibration and noise.

In areas such as the city center, where extra vibration mitigation was needed to preserve the historic buildings, Pandrol installed Floating Slab Mats under the track beds. These durable, maintenance-free mats – made from 100% recyclable material – dramatically reduce vibration in the frequency ranges that pose the most danger to nearby buildings.

The Pandrol QTrack® is a continuously supported and fastened embedded ballastless track system, where the rail is completely encapsulated by elastic prefabricated resin bonded rubber profiles with a unique shape and adapted stiffness characteristics.

The Pandrol Floating Slab Mat (FSM) is a high-performing vibration attenuation floating slab system. Easy to install, maintenance free and compatible with all types of rail and track systems, it has been designed to reduce the lifecycle costs of the railway.

Leading The Way On Sustainability

Our ambition is to become a global leader in CO₂ and greenhouse gas emission (GhG) reduction, having been awarded a Gold Medal in the 2024 EcoVadis sustainability ratings for the fourth year in a row. Since 2020, Pandrol have donated 45,000 euros to causes that promote sustainable action.

We have set the below internal emission targets, which we aim to achieve through making our manufacturing processes more sustainable, continually reviewing our supply chains, working recycled materials into our products, and implementing Environmental Product Declarations across our portfolio.

  • To reduce GhG emissions in Scopes 1 & 2 by 4.2% per year until 2030
  • To reduce GhG emissions in Scope 3 by 2.5% per year until 2030
