Magnet

Lineside magnets – also known as track magnets, signalling magnets, or train detection magnets – keep automatic warning systems and power control functions running reliably on track. Modular, low-maintenance and quick to install, our track magnets perform safely across every climate and track type, with minimal disruption to your network.

What are Magnet products and how do they work?

Track magnets create the physical link between track and train that keeps signalling systems working. Our Automatic Warning System (AWS) magnets generate a magnetic field that interacts with a receiver on board the train, triggering an audible in-cab warning as it approaches a signal.

Automatic Power Control (APC) magnets work differently: mounted on the field side of the rails on a single sleeper, they instruct an electric locomotive to open and close its circuit breaker as it crosses a neutral section of the overhead power line, preventing arcing.

Both are signalling magnets engineered for permanent installation in track, performing reliably from mainline routes to metro networks.

  • Cuts the total cost of deploying signalling assets into track, even across large-scale installation programmes

  • Quick and tool-light to install, with minimal interference to the running line and possession time

  • Withstands the full range of climates and track conditions over long periods, with no periodic maintenance required

Product benefits

  • Fast, low-disruption installation

Modular Rapid Fit Frames for AWS magnets cut typical track magnet fitting time to around 20 minutes, with minimal track interference.

  • Built to last with minimal upkeep

Our fully sealed lineside magnet units are IP68 rated and need no periodic maintenance, even in extreme climates.

  • A magnet for every application

From mainline AWS to power control and third-rail variants, there's a Pandrol lineside magnet suited to your network.

Overview

The Series 2 AWS Magnet is Pandrol's fully updated Automatic Warning System track magnet, redesigned to meet the latest Network Rail standards. Available as standard or extra-strength permanent magnets, electromagnets and suppressor magnets for 110Vac and 24Vdc infrastructures, it fits using the Rapid Fit Frame System in around 20 minutes per double assembly, or retrofits to legacy frames with approved adaptor plates. Fully sealed and lightweight, it suits mainline, metro and high-speed applications.

Overview

Temporary AWS Magnets provide a fast, tool-free way to place an emergency or temporary speed restriction on the track. Used alongside Pandrol's Signboard Supports, they're available in standard strength (yellow) and extra strength (green) for third-rail applications, and fit a wide range of rail profiles, including bullhead. At around 20kg, the complete lineside magnet unit is light enough for one person to install without ballast penetration, and is supplied with a shipping tube for transport and storage.

Overview

The Automatic Power Control Magnet instructs an electric locomotive to open its circuit breaker as it crosses a neutral section, then switch back on again, preventing arcing without driver intervention. Mounted on a single sleeper using rare-earth magnets for a stable magnetic field, it installs in 2 to 3 minutes, works with any standard concrete or timber sleeper, and suits switch and crossing sites. It needs no removal for tamping and requires minimal maintenance.

There are more Pandrol clips in service than there are people in Europe. Over three-times the amount to be precise. We have 3 billion clips in use and Europe has a population of around 750 million.
