Railroad Noise and Vibration Mitigation

Noise and vibration from passing trains can disrupt communities and damage nearby structures, making railroad noise mitigation a vital responsibility of networks. At Pandrol, we support railroad noise mitigation with fastenings and sustainable resilient systems that work at the source to protect rail users, local residents, infrastructure and your carbon targets.

As railroad networks expand into towns and cities, track runs closer than ever to homes, offices, hospitals and public spaces. Every train that passes generates ground-borne vibration that travels beyond the track itself. In dense urban environments, that ground-borne vibration can reach building foundations and disrupt the people living and working nearby.

Left unmanaged, this vibration also accelerates rail corrugation, increasing noise and shortening the working life of the track. It also raises the risk of structural damage to nearby buildings and infrastructure, particularly in cities built on aging foundations or where new lines run beneath sensitive sites.

Implementing railroad vibration control measures to meet strict insertion loss and noise standards is now a baseline expectation for any urban railroad project. At the same time, operators are under growing pressure to hit carbon reduction targets, meaning the materials used to control noise and vibration need to perform sustainably.

How We Support

  • Sustainable Resilient Systems

Our approach to railroad noise mitigation and rail vibration control is built on recycled rubber technology with one of the lowest CO2 footprints in the market. It goes beyond meeting insertion loss standards, helping cut rail corrugation and vibration transmission while working towards your carbon targets too.

  • Precision vibration isolation

For concrete and slab track, Vanguard's low vertical stiffness delivers exceptionally high vibration isolation for precise rail vibration control, while QTrack® supports the rail on all sides to meet strict vertical and lateral criteria. Both decouple vibration and current from the surrounding structure.

  • Solutions for ballasted track

Bonded baseplates combine electrical insulation with vibration and corrugation control, cutting the dynamic loads that drive maintenance grinding. Our Floating Slab Mats work alongside them to reduce maintenance requirements, improve track quality and add further vibration attenuation.

Did you know?

Pandrol has manufactured so many rail fastenings over its history that if you lined them all up, you would have enough to build a railroad track that stretches all the way from the Earth to the Moon (and we are currently working on the return trip!).
