Pandrol AWS Magnets Explained

A rail Automatic Warning System (AWS), or track warning system, is a safety product designed to provide train drivers with an audible warning of the status of upcoming signals. AWS train systems work on a series of magnets and electromagnets installed onto the track to create interacting magnetic fields between signals and trains.

Pandrol’s Series 2 AWS Magnets are our most up-to-date design, and can be fitted using the Pandrol Rapid Fit Frame System, with a typical installation time of 20 minutes for double magnet assembly.

Pandrol AWS train magnets can be retrofitted to existing legacy frames using fully approved adaptor plates for a fast update that brings your system in line with the latest safety regulations.

Relay-free

Reduce the power consumption and current draw of your rail project’s track warning system by switching to Pandrol GE Magnet AWS units, which enable direct drive. In addition, YE and YS magnets can be driven without relays.

Remove the risk of return field detection to ensure consistent high performance of your tracking warning system. The Pandrol Series 2 AWS Magnet system has been designed with an optimised magnetic field shape.

Rapid fit

Pair Series 2 AWS Magnets with Pandrol Rapid Fit Frames (PA05/04606) for fast and easy installation. Modular plug coupling is used, and the magnets’ flat baseplate design means that no ballast needs to be removed.

Network Rail compliance

Comply with the latest Network Rail requirements (GE/RT8075), including flux density compliance: at input voltage from 88V (132Vac for 110Vac units); at input voltage from 18V (30Vdc for 24Vdc units); across the ambient temperature range, -20°C to 40°C.

The product has been comprehensively tested, including: shock and vibration EN50125-3; IP68 rated (water and dust ingress protection); climatic (DEF-STAN 00-35 Part 4). Mean time between failure (MTBF) values are more than 114 years for the 24Vdc units and in excess of 76 years for the 110Vac units.
